I Did a Guest Blog!

I recently had a great memory of a guest blog I did pop up on my Facebook timeline. It took me by surprise and the surprise was doubly-good because I had all but forgotten about writing the blog. I immediately contacted Mary Ellen Miller, who asked me to do the guest blog for her. I wanted to get her permission to repurpose the original content into a slightly different form. Mel, as many of her friends call her, was very gracious in answering “Yes!” Thank you, Mel! I appreciate you.

Marketing is the lifeblood of any business, especially small business. Without effective marketing, the business withers and dies, like a plant without water. Networking and superior customer service are the linchpins of effective marketing. In our COVID-19 economy, this is more true now than when I first penned the blog in 2013.

The Nordstrom Way to Customer Service Excellence by Robert Spector and Patrick McCarthy pretty much sets the standard for customer service, which is an essential part of marketing and servicing the client or customer after the sale is made or the service is performed. Years ago, I read Susan RoAne’s How To Work a Room. It’s essential for honing conversational skills necessary for effective networking, which sure makes marketing easier.

Another book I read years ago is What They Didn’t Teach You at Harvard Business School by Mark McCormack; the advice is timeless, and teaches all sorts of things you didn’t realize you didn’t know. Dave Ramsey’s EntreLeadership is a must-read for any small business; pay close attention to the chapter devoted to marketing.

Word of mouth marketing is the most effective marketing. The Anatomy of Buzz : How to Create Word of Mouth Marketing by Emanuel Rosen is a great book that tells you how to do just that. Getting Everything You Can Out of All You’ve Got by Jay Abraham is filled with examples that I love.

Harvey Mackay has many roles; three of them are marketer, networker, and author. One of Mackay’s books I particularly like is The Mackay MBA of Selling in the Real World; it’s fabulous, as are all of his timeless books. He writes like he is sitting with you in your living room, having a nice chat. Mr, Mackay’s most recent book is You Haven’t Hit Your Peak Yet, and is just as good as all of his preceding books. Take the Stairs by Rory Vaden is filled with gems of great wisdom, which can be applied to your personal and professional life.

Anything by Seth Godin is worth taking time to read. I couldn’t include it in Mel’s blog, because Godin’s This is Marketing wasn’t published until 2018.

We don’t usually think of management, marketing and medicine as hand-in-hand, but they can pair nicely. Management Lessons from Mayo Clinic by Leonard Berry and Kent Seltman is very informative. Pay close attention to the last half of the book.

What are some of your favorite marketing books? Please add to my list!
